Case Study: Comprehensive Event Medical Cover for Solent Powerboat Race
Halo Medical Group was recently tasked to provide medical services for powerboat racing event on the Solent, supporting both competitor and spectator safety across land and sea.
This case highlights Halo’s ability to deliver complex, multi-zone event medical cover, combining onshore clinical care, maritime medical standby, and emergency response planning. With spectators, high-speed boats, and multiple risk factors including water immersion, high-velocity injuries, and weather exposure, the event required meticulous planning and advanced clinical preparedness.
Event Summary
- Event Type: Offshore Powerboat Racing Championship
- Location: Solent (Southampton–Cowes corridor)
- Duration: 1 day (with 2 days of setup and practice)
- Attendance: ~4,500 spectators, 30 race teams, support staff
- Zones Covered:
- Coastal viewing areas and grandstands
- Floating pontoons and marina
- Offshore race course
- Competitor boat launch site
- Medical Risk Level: High (due to water-related trauma, high-speed collisions, and mixed public environments)
Key Requirements
The event organisers required a comprehensive and compliant medical strategy, aligned with Royal Yachting Association (RYA) safety protocols and the Purple Guide. Key objectives included:
- Medical standby for offshore collisions, capsizes, and trauma
- Onshore first aid and paramedic response for spectators and crew
- Integration with maritime rescue services, including HM Coastguard
- A well-equipped medical control point for triage and coordination
- Rapid access to secondary care (Southampton General and St. Mary’s Hospital)
Our Approach
1. Medical Planning & Risk Assessment
Halo’s Event Medical Planning Team conducted a thorough pre-event risk assessment, site visit, and multi-agency planning session with:
- Race marshals and event organisers
- HM Coastguard
- RNLI (inshore lifeboat teams)
- Solent Harbour Authorities
- Local NHS acute providers and ambulance liaison officers
We created a Medical Operations Plan and a Major Incident Response Framework, covering all key areas, including water-based response, hypothermia management, blunt trauma care, and mass-casualty contingencies.
2. Deployment of Medical Assets
Halo provided a multi-skilled, location-specific deployment across land and water, including:
Onshore Medical Cover:
- 2 x HCPC Paramedics stationed at main grandstand
- 2 x Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) with foot patrol responsibility
- 1 x First Responder stationed at the start line
- 1 x CQC-registered ambulance vehicle, fully equipped for emergency evacuation
Maritime Medical Cover:
- 1 x Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) with onboard water-trained paramedic
- Equipped with:
- Scoop stretcher, spine boards, trauma kits
- Maritime radios and waterproof vitals monitoring
- Dry bags for medications and IV fluids
- Operated in tandem with safety boat crews and RNLI assets
All medical staff were trained in maritime incident management, water rescue support, and had pre-briefed on sea-specific injury patterns (e.g., high-velocity impact injuries, immersion hypothermia, and secondary drowning risk).
Incidents Managed
Over the course of the event, Halo’s team managed 23 clinical interactions, including:
- Spectator-related incidents:
- Heat exhaustion (5 cases)
- Minor slips and falls (6 cases)
- One child with suspected mild concussion after a fall (safely monitored on-site)
Only one patient required ambulance transfer to hospital, a crew member with suspected rib fractures, handled via Halo’s onshore ambulance with a full clinical handover at Southampton General ED.
Seamless Multi-Agency Coordination
Halo’s control team maintained continuous radio contact with:
- Race control and marshals
- Safety boats and floating pontoons
- Coastguard incident coordination centre
- RNLI Solent Division
The operational planning successfully integrated with the wider maritime emergency ecosystem, ensuring all medical incidents were triaged appropriately, and no delays occurred in accessing additional resources.
Feedback from Event Organisers
“We chose Halo because of their reputation for high-quality event medical services, and they exceeded every expectation. From clinical professionalism to working seamlessly with the Coastguard and our own race teams, their presence brought confidence and peace of mind. We’ll be bringing them back next season.”
